Empty House on a Famous Hill The Santa Anna wind won’t stop blowing hot and hard like it’s pushing me aside. She’s too hot not to burn you but you’ll pay for her time so just take a swig and let her say goodbye. In a dark empty house on a famous old hill if they don’t love you now they never will. Cause if you sell your heart to their empty souls you’ll be vacant like this house upon the hill. The city in the smog leaves you broken like her faded landmarks get built up to fall. You get tossed along the freeway when her new thing comes along but she can never let your heart forget at all. In a dark empty house on a famous old hill if they don’t love you now they never will. Cause if you sell your heart to their empty souls you’ll be vacant like this house upon the hill. lonely in the spotlight spit out like the salt washed up on the coastline that’s leaves a bittersweet taste in your dirty mouth. I don’t wanna’ leave this way but as sure as the sun on the 101 you won’t remember my name. I don’t wanna leave this way but I can’t go on giving all of my love to town that don’t feel the same.

The Devil’s Gotta’ Earn I hear everbody talking wishin’ I was gone. Everybody else is doin’ everybody wrong. Well alright. I’m done hangin’ round. I don’t need no needle, and I don’t need no pills. And I don’t need no doctor to tell me how I feel. Alright, you can keep the bill. I been drinkin’ poison and hopin’ you’d fall ill. So maybe I’m an angel and maybe I’m a thief. Maybe I’m a beggar that you walk by on the street. Alright, you cut off both my wings. Sell me for a nickel. The devil’s gotta earn. I don’t need no banker to tell me what I’m worth. It’s alright. Some folks they never learn. You’re eating fire and you’re praying I get burnt. Papa always warned me, “Careful who you trust. Kings - they build their castles with your blood. It’s alright. They all just turn to dust. So, let ‘em take your wallet. Let ‘em take your things. You got your soul, boy and that’s all you need to sing.” Well alright then. Come on take everything. Like stealin’ flowers from the graves of the deceased. They’re doin’ nothin and takin’ claim for everything. Like getting married without payin’ for the ring.

It’s Only The Night You ever see a man with a well so deep and wide but when you see that man thirsting you wonder what makes a well run dry? You ever close your eyes and pretend you’re not alive? You’re just a shell with a hell hole in your mind. But I would like to hold my head up high. Oh sing with me the anthem of the night. When the light has gone out in your eye don’t worry it’s gonna’ be fine. When the light has gone out in your eye it’s only the night. You ever wake up alone in a bed you’ve never seen? There’s only so many pills and so many women and so many drinks ‘til you bleed. You ever take what you made, light a match and throw it away? There’s only so many people you have in your life you can burn and still know that they’ll stay But I would like to hold my head up high. Oh sing with me the anthem of the night. When the light has gone out in your eyes don’t worry it’s gonna’ be fine. When the light has gone out in your eye it’s only the night. If it’s only the dark that you’re seeing - if it’s blacker than shadows and coal - If you’re blinded by the witching hour and your blood you know it’s runs so cold if you sing and nobody can hear you - if you’re wandering alone like a stray - you know it’s only the night ‘til the morning then the morning gives way to the day cause It’s only the night… But I would like to hold my head up high. Oh sing with me the anthem of the night. When the light has gone out in your eyes don’t worry it’s gonna’ be fine. When the light has gone out in your eyes it’s only the night.

Road To Ruin Woman Somewhere right between a saint and a sinner lies a woman with a wayward tongue. She’ll take your wallet when you lean in to kiss her but you won’t miss your money when she’s gone. You never thought you’d be the prey for the hunter. So sure you had a prayer when she walked by, but now you’re lying face first in the gutter when all you had to do was say goodbye. Lock up your doors and pull the shades. Don’t let no harlot dig your grave. The road to ruin woman lies in wait. So boy, don’t think you’re gonna’ get away. You won’t get away. I thought your mama taught ya’ so much better than to lurk around the twilight gals. They lead ya’ willing like an ox to the slaughter and leave you on the dirty side of town. You never thought you’d be the bird in the tangle. So sure you’d catch her in a blinking eye. Your mama must’ve fed a fool at her table cause now you’re just hungry for her lies. Lock up your doors and pull the shades. Don’t let no harlot dig your grave. The road to ruin woman lies in wait. So boy, don’t think you’re gonna’ get away. You won’t get away. She’ll drag you down to ruin. That is all you’re ever gonna’ find with her kind. You know she’ll drag you down to ruin. That is all you’re ever gonna’ find. lock up your doors and pull the shades don’t let no harlot dig your grave the road to ruin woman lies in wait so boy, don’t think you’re gonna’ get away you won’t get away.

This City Dies Tonight This city dies tonight. I’ve never seen the lights shine so bright. Like a crown i’ll wear my way out of town. This city dies tonight. ‘Cause here there’s too many past lives and dusty streets with a story to tell. All of my heroes are dead. My story is written and it ain’t written well. There’s cheering in the streets. I wear a crown of defeat. I never meant to let you down that’s why i’m leavin’ town. ‘Cause here there’s too many faces cause everyone’s got an extra they hide. All of their smiles always showing ‘til they think you’re not looking or you look in their eyes. Everyone wants to be remembered. I never planned to be remembered like this. Now I never ever want to come back alone. Lord only knows if I’ll even be missed. Cause here there’s too many strangers. I thought i knew them but I guess I was wrong. All of my friends turned against me. My story is written and it’s been written wrong. it’s been written wrong.

Coasts 03:40
Coasts Making circles. Breaking circles. Changing coastlines. Changing minds. Horizon on the left side. Horizon on the right. Somewhere in the middle sits a boy who just don't know, but he's sure enough of one thing that this can't keep going on. Well it's just ain't right. We should be side by side. You should feel at home, dear. I give up the fight. Take a picture of a glass heart in washington square park - he'd probably crack it open tryin' to make his mark. Bending backwards for a bastard stands a girl who's back's too sore. Her bones are getting brittle from shouldering the load. Well it's just ain't right. You should have your time. I should feel ashamed, dear. I'm giving up the fight. Your busted baby's gonna make it up. Been too long diggin' dust. Been too long gatherin' rust. Been too far gone. Your busted baby's gonna make it up. Been too long diggin' dust. Been too long gatherin' rust. Been far too long. Well it's just ain't right. We should be side by side. You should feel at home, dear. I give up the fight. Well it's just ain't right. You should have your time. I should feel ashamed, dear. I'm giving up the fight.

A Miner’s Prayer Hello my love, hope this letter finds you well. Only distance separates us now but it still can feel like hell. Hello my love, was it wrong to leave you there with a crop that’s died and a home that’s falling down in disrepair? You know my love, I did the only thing I could. Now I send home every cent I make ‘til the day I’m home for good. Listen to me darling love, I know hard times are ahead, but as I write this letter, dear, I pray they soon shall end. Hello my love, I been waiting every day for the river’s flow to bring me gold or to wash this life away. Hello my love, your letter’s all I got to give me hope so far from home prospecting by myself. You know my love, It’s a bitter winter too. The gold don’t come but if it does I’d trade it all for you. Hello my only love, I fall asleep at night with your name upon my tired lips underneath the pale moon light. 'Cause all I love is miles away from here. Oh the saints above if they listen can they hear? Do they listen to my prayers? Do they hear a miner’s prayer? Hello my love, can you write about our girl? I long to hear her tiny voice more than any in this world. Hello my love, can you kiss my only son? Is he growing up to look like his pa or is he favoring his mom? You know my love, this single photograph reminds me of the way your hair falls on your naked back. Please my darling love, tell me how you’re making do cause I’m broken down in loneliness every night im not with you 'Cause all I love is miles away from here. Oh Lord above do you listen? Do you hear? Won’t you listen to my prayers? Won’t you hear a miner’s prayer? Hello my love, I’m returning now to thee. With gold I come to keep us fed and raise our family. Don’t worry love, only weeks ‘til I return and I’ll never leave you ever again, my dear, you have my word. Hello my love, this letter is my last. There will be no need to write again since I’m on my journey back. A pen in hand on a fallen eastbound man bag of gold tore from his twisted neck and a bullet in his back.

Cocaine, Whiskey And Heroin Cocaine. Whiskey. Heroin. I got the cocaine and whiskey and heroin blues. Cocaine, whiskey and heroin blues. Cocaine and whiskey and heroin blues. Ain’t nothing left to lose There’s blood in the sink. I hear death on the prowl. Pawned all that I own. God knows where I’m bound. No food on my plate. No love left to save. Gonna’ dig an early grave I got the cocaine, whiskey and heroin blues. Cocaine and whiskey and heroin blues. Cocaine and whiskey and heroin blues. I got nothing left to lose. I’ve been up on the ridge. Shone proud like the sun. But I gave it all up for what I’ve become. So hear this lament for all that I’ve spent. I never meant to hurt no one. I got the cocaine, whiskey and heroin blues. Cocaine and whiskey and heroin blues. Cocaine and whiskey and heroin blues. I got nothing left to lose. I got them cocaine and whiskey and heroin blues. Cocaine, whiskey and heroin blues. Cocaine and whiskey and heroin blues. Ain’t nothing left to lose. I got nothing left to lose.

We’re Broken But We’ll Never Be Alone When you think you’ve had enough your troubles got the best of you your friends they all forget your name - I’ll be there. I’m the one that’s always here for you. When your record player skips and when your pistol just won’t shoot your telephone won’t connect - I’ll be there, but remember that I’m broken too. I ain’t afraid of anything but losing you. ‘Cause if the world takes everything we own you got me and we won’t be alone. So hang onto this broken heart of stone. We’re broken but we’ll never be alone. When your drinks have all gone dry your wallet runs out too soon the cupboards they are bare inside - I’ll be there, but remember that I’m empty too. So every time you need a rest your soul is feeling black and blue you’re thinking you’re the only one - I’ll be there, but remember that I’m just like you. I ain’t afraid of anything but losing you. But if the world takes everything we own you got me and we won’t be alone. so hang onto this empty heart of stone. we’re empty but we’ll never be alone. We’re broken but we’ll never be alone.

Caged Bird 05:08
Caged Bird Tell me what is that look in your eyes. You know we’ve come too far to give up and just say goodbye. But I know that a caged bird sings when it cries cause it can’t spread its wings to take flight in the sky. But I need you now. But I need you now. How was I to know? How was I to know the way I’d need you now? Tell me why is love so hard to make? We can build towers but can’t help our own hearts not break. We fight wars and barely pay mind to the toll. But we’ll break down and we’ll cry when our lover’s gone cold. And I need you now. And I need you now. How was I to know? How was I to know the way I’d need you now? I thought we were the lucky ones – the pair that beat the odds. I thought we were the lucky ones but now I know I’m wrong. Cause I need you now. Cause I need you now. How was I to know? How was I to know the way I’d need you now? The way I'd need you now...

This World Ain’t Got Nothing Don’t come looking for me - you won’t find a trace. Here there’s too many devils for a good man to face. No one would miss a bird of the air when it’s flown and like that no account creature I’m already gone. This world ain’t got nothing for me anymore now. This world ain’t got nothing for me. If I know what I need I don’t need anymore cause this world ain’t got nothing. Nothing for me. Only empty pockets - with songs I could pay, but there’s no end in sight to the wars I don’t wage. Now there’s a struggle coming I don’t want to see. Yet I’m too old to fight it but I’m too young to grieve. This world ain’t got nothing for me anymore now. This world ain’t got nothing for me. If I know what I need I don’t need anymore cause this world ain’t got nothing. Nothing for me. There’s a ship a’sailing away from this coast. If you’re watchful you’ll ride it. If you’re careless you won’t. Does anybody hear it or am I alone? There’s a distant song playing and calling me home. This world ain’t got nothing for me anymore now. This world ain’t got nothing for me. If I know what I need I don’t need anymore cause this world ain’t got nothing. Nothing for me.
